Tell us more about yourself.
Hi, I’m Kayla Kurin! I’m originally from Toronto, Canada but have been traveling for the last 4 years, and am currently making camp in Europe and the UK most of the time. I’m passionate about business and run two remote businesses myself!
I run online yoga programs, workshops, and retreats for people living with chronic illnesses, and also work as a freelancer in social media marketing.
When I’m not working I’m usually at the beach, hiking, or trying out the newest restaurant in town!
How long have you been a digital nomad? What made you decide to become one?
I’ve been a digital nomad for three years. I started after taking a year off work to volunteer and travel, and realised that I wanted to keep traveling and cultivating this freedom in my life.
I started freelancing just to make a bit of money and figure out my next move, but it has now turned into my full time career! I also trained as a yoga instructor and decided I wanted to help people living with chronic illnesses. I try to run workshops and retreats in different cities around the world as a way to get to know the different areas and communities!
What has been your best experience as a digital nomad?
Finding a place in a foreign country where no one speaks your language but it just suddenly feels like home.
Swimming in the Med in November on my lunch break.
Landing my dream client.
Your worse experience?
FINDING THE WIFI. An eternal struggle haha.
If I’m making home in a place for a longer period of time, it usually isn’t a problem, but when I’m staying in places for a shorter amount of time and may be in hostels, airbnbs, or camping it can be tricky to find reliable wifi.
There is nothing more annoying as a digital nomad as arriving somewhere new, getting ready to start work in the morning, and having to spend several hours trying to find a place to connect. Even worse if you’re lugging your bag with you!
Did you encounter any safety issues while traveling?
I don’t think I experienced any safety issues as a woman that I don’t also experience in my home country. I definitely have my wits about me, and think through my travel choices a bit more than men I know traveling alone, but again this is also true in my home country.
How can someone learn to do what you do?
I’m a big believer in self learning. Most of what I know I learned from Google. I think doing research online is a very underrated part of become an industry leader and learning skills. Once you find what your jam is you can then register for more advanced courses or try to find a mentor to help you become more successful in your industry.
We are so lucky to live in a time when so much information is available to us, so I definitely recommend taking advantage of that!
One advice for an aspiring digital nomad?
Go for it! If this is your dream you can make it happen. If it feels scary, I recommend starting slow and building up a business or freelance business on the side while you still have income coming in. Even asking your company for more work from home days can be a great way to start traveling and working!
